PhD Candidate Law and Governance in Indonesia (1.0 fte)
Vacancy number: 15-293

Project description

Leiden University and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) offer a four-year PhD position at the KITLV/Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies in the area of law and governance in Indonesia. The PhD student will be working at the Leiden-based KITLV, an institute of the KNAW, and will defend his or her PhD thesis at Leiden University. The position is shared with the Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Development (VVI) at Leiden Law School. The PhD candidate will be jointly supervised by senior researchers at KITLV and the VVI.

The research proposed by the candidate should fit well into the scope of research of the KITLV and the VVI. It should relate to broader socio-legal themes such as rule of law, access to justice and/or citizenship in Indonesia. It may have either an institutional focus (for instance administrative courts, ombudsmen, judicial commission) or a more thematic one (for instance criminal procedure, land tenure, health rights, women’s rights, etc.). In any case, there should be a clear connection with the question how the Indonesian legal system develops within its social and political context.
